Summer Palace, Beijing

The capital of the People's Republic of China, Beijing is a unique reflection of the many changing facets of contemporary Chinese culture, where ancient cultural sites such as the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven vie for space alongside high-rise buildings, modern shopping malls, and an intricate freeway system. A thriving commercial capital, continually developing, Beijing's 200-year-old cultural heritage is still very much in evidence, with a vast array of stunning attractions throughout the city.

Right in the center of Beijing lies Tiananmen Square with the Great Hall of the People, Mao Zedong's (Mao Tse-Tung) Mausoleum, and the Museum of Chinese History. To the north of the square is the Forbidden City whilst to the south lies the Temple of Heaven, China's largest temple complex dating from the 15th century. The Peninsula Beijing is conveniently located within walking distance of these major attractions.

Also close to the hotel are the Wangfujing and Dongdan shopping districts, with department stores and boutiques selling everything from designer goods to souvenirs. Just east of the hotel is the Chaoyang district of Beijing, a busy commercial area and housing many of Beijing's embassies.

North of The Peninsula Beijing is the Lama Temple. Stunningly beautiful, it is a Tibetan Buddhist temple, the most colorful in Bejing, and an active monastery.

One of China's greatest treasures is the Great Wall of China, which is just an hour's drive from Beijing. The Peninsula Beijing offers a "Wild" Great Wall sightseeing tour from its extensive range of Peninsula Academy programs.
